Chatting With Construction Project Manager At Kensa Contracting And Founder Of She’s Electric- Karen Boom from Chelmsford, England, United Kingdom- In 2010, Karen Boom was searching for an electrician to handle a small project. What she encountered during that search was a mishmash of responses – some were too busy to provide a quote, others came out to quote and vanished, a few never even showed up, and then there were those whose quotes seemed astronomically high. It was this frustrating experience that set Karen Boom on the path to becoming an electrician herself. She identified two glaring gaps in the market: firstly, the need for honesty and reliability in this field – showing up when promised, or at least communicating if plans change, and secondly, the importance of empathy and compassion in understanding customers’ needs, even when those needs seemed unrealistic.

Karen delved into the world of “Sparky Training,” but the plethora of C&G course codes and the absence of female role models left her bewildered. In short, she faced numerous hurdles and pushed herself well outside her comfort zone, leading to the birth of “She’s Electric.”

Today, Karen Boom is thrilled to announce that she’s earned her TMIET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) certificate. In 2010, she underwent a midlife transformation and ventured into the world of electricians. It wasn’t an easy journey, especially for a mature woman, but she persevered. Over the last 12 years, she’s accomplished much and cherished countless memories. In 2019, she even reached the finals of Screwfix Britain’s Top Tradesperson. Following that, Hattie Hasan MBE inspired her to create a fundraising calendar in support of The Register Of Tradeswomen, with stunning images captured by Sarah Toon LRPS ASICIP. She also treated herself to a wonderful big truck, lovingly dubbed “The Beast,” and relished being the fourth emergency service for her clients. She’s had the privilege of mentoring and supporting numerous individuals who found her on social media and deemed her an inspiration. To them, Karen Boom says she’s just being “HER,” pursuing her passion. If her journey and story can help others realize that they too can follow their own paths, then she considers it a great honor.

These are just a few of the highlights, and now, six months into her fantastic new role at Oaksmere Design Limited as a Project Manager, Karen Boom couldn’t be happier. She didn’t know where she was headed exactly when she embarked on this unknown journey 12 years ago, but she’s ecstatic that, after putting down her tools, she’s found herself working for such an outstanding company.

Karen may be only five feet tall, but her personality is larger than life, and her passion for the construction industry knows no bounds. #BeTheChangeYouWantToSee
